Webinar: Tyre emissions from the latest electric vehicles
Our CEO & Founder, Nick Molden presented a webinar on the tyre emissions from the latest electric vehicles on 19th September 2023. The world is on a path to electrifying everything that moves, primarily driven by the desire to decarbonise. But no vehicle is zero emission, and the latest emissions regulations in Europe, the US and beyond are now starting to incorporate non-exhaust emissions.

The world is on a path to electrifying everything that moves, primarily driven by the desire to decarbonise. But no vehicle is zero emission, and the latest emissions regulations in Europe, the US and beyond are now starting to incorporate non-exhaust emissions. The task is a major one, though, as changes in other regulations and tastes are leading to ever-heavier vehicles, which is likely to increase tyre emissions. What is less well understood is the chemical formulations used in specialist 'EV tyres', and whether they are potentially more or less toxic that standard tyres. This webinar will share the latest chemical profiling results from our EQUA test programme, to show the key trends.
This is particularly relevant in the light of the California Environmental Protection Agency’s new rule on chemical composition, aiming to reduce the use of the toxic 6PPD preservative. We will show the extent to which alternatives are already being used. We will also consider the progress the European Union is making on its Euro 7 regulation for tyres. Current proposals for a measurement method fromt he Task Force on Tyre Abrasion will be reviewed in the light of our real-world wear rate testing. How efficient and effective will the proposed method be, and what might an optimal initial limit value look like? This testing fits within Emissions Analytics’ expanded EQUA test programme, which includes regulated and unregulated tailpipe emissions and vehicle interior air quality. Watch out for future webinars on these topic, and do subscribe to Emissions Analytics' newsletter to find out about priority access.

Emissions Analytics is pleased to welcome Daniel Marsh and Carl Desouza from Imperial College London as our guests to discuss the “Route map to Net Zero Construction.”
Construction machines are typically diesel powered and, depending upon their age and application, can produce relatively high levels of NOx and particulates in urban environments. The construction industry is determined to reduce its environmental impact and meet NetZero targets, but choosing the right path can be daunting when numerous alternatives exist. There is no one size fits all solution.
Our webinar will discuss results from various projects that were led by Imperial College London, alongside Emissions Analytics’ real-world emissions testing services.
This is not intended to be a definitive guide or to provide prescriptive answers, simply to share independent test results and support sharper industry discussion.

Our CEO & Founder, Nick Molden presented a webinar on Exposures to particles and volatile organic compounds across multiple transportation modes on 14th December 2022. To watch the webinar and download the presentation please see below.
The webinar covered what’s is cleanest way to get from London Paddington to the centre of Oxford? Not in terms of tailpipe emissions, but rather in terms of the traveller’s own exposure to the air quality inside the mode of transport. Emissions Analytics studied this in a project for the TRANSITION Network in the UK, and this webinar will present the findings.
Personal exposures were tested in real-world conditions across nine different transport modes on journeys, covering active travel, public transport and private cars. Such exposures are relevant to questions of traveller comfort, safety in the context of airborne diseases such as Covid-19 and a growing awareness of health, safety and productivity effects of interior air quality. Pollutants measured were particle number, particle mass, carbon dioxide and speciated volatile organic compounds, using devices carried on or with the traveller.
The results will reveal the most and least polluted methods of transport, and the likely sources of the pollution. Further, the dynamic nature of pollution will also be shown, to quantify when total exposures are mostly driven by short, larger spikes rather than persistent lower levels. The findings are intended to feed into the growing body of work around vehicle interior air quality, including the new CEN standardised methodology, CWA17934.

Tyre wear emissions represent a widespread and growing challenge as vehicles become heavier, not least due to the battery weight in electric vehicles. Health evidence is mounting showing how tyre particles enter the bodies of humans and animals via air, soil and water. The questions are, therefore, how much material is released, what chemicals may be leaching into the environment as a result, and what are the potential toxic effects for humans and animals?
Over the past year, Emissions Analytics has undertaken considerable research to analyse the organic composition of tyres. To that end, we have independently sourced hundreds of tyres samples for analysis in our laboratory utilising two-dimensional gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to separate, identify and quantify those organic compounds present, and to estimate how they will leach when released.
We invite you to join our webinar so that we may share our work to date and welcome your input.

Emissions Analytics Addresses Oxford Air Quality Meeting
Our Chief Executive, Nick Molden, is speaking at Keble College Oxford this Friday, 10th January 2020, at the Oxford Air Quality Meeting.
Our Chief Executive, Nick Molden, is speaking at Keble College Oxford this Friday, 10th January 2020, at the Oxford Air Quality Meeting.
The event has been established to draw together experts in vehicle emissions, air quality measurement, public health, and policy and features a key note speech from UK clean air champion, Professor Martin Williams of King’s College London.
Speaking at 11.30 am, Nick Molden will look at solving poor air quality quickly and fairly and how the consequences of ‘Dieselgate’ continue to cause market confusion at government, industry and customer levels.
The aim of the event is to facilitate interactions and discussions across a wide range of stake holders in the air quality field. Recent advances in real driving emissions measurement mean that greater understanding of roadside vehicle emissions is being developed. In addition, low cost air quality sensing and an increasing insight into how various pollutants effect humans mean that the evidence base is growing rapidly.
The Oxford Air Quality Meeting will bring together all of these groups, alongside policy makers to enable future improvements in air quality.
