Tailpipe emissions: Heavy duty — Emissions Analytics

Tailpipe emissions: Heavy duty

Heavy-duty vehicles are essential for transportation and logistics, but their emissions pose significant regulatory and environmental challenges.

At Emissions Analytics, we provide independent, real-world tailpipe emissions testing for trucks, buses, and industrial vehicles, delivering precise data that helps ensure compliance, optimise performance, and meet sustainability goals.

Our Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) capture real-world emissions under actual driving conditions, providing more accurate data than laboratory-based testing.

Whether for research & development, emissions regulations such as Euro VI ISC (in-service comformity) or benchmarking technologies and alternative fuels, our customers turn to us for unrivalled expertise in the application of Portable Emissions Measuring Systems (PEMS).

Why choose Emissions Analytics for heavy-duty vehicle emissions testing?

Project management

Liaison with the end user to arrange the tests and ensure customer satisfaction is maintained

Mobility

Working globally via bases in the UK, Germany and USA

Flexibility

Working around operators’ working hours

Experience

Experience across various applications from small all-terrain vehicles to inland waterway vessels

Cost effectiveness

Removing the internal burden to free up skilled staff for core projects, through outsourcing

Types of Heavy-Duty vehicles we test

Our Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) testing is applicable to a wide range of heavy-duty vehicles. We provide emissions analysis for:

Heavy-duty trucks (HGVs) – Long-haul and regional freight transport

Delivery vans and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) – Last-mile delivery and urban logistics

Refrigerated transport vehicles – Testing emissions impact of cooling units

Buses and coaches – City and intercity public transport emissions monitoring

Shuttle and airport transfer vehicles – Assessing emissions in high-traffic environments

Refuse collection trucks – Waste management and street cleaning fleets

Emergency response vehicles – Fire engines and ambulances

Military and defence vehicles – Tactical transport and armoured personnel carriers

We are also able to test non-road mobile machinery, more information is available here.

Comprehensive emissions measurement and analysis for regulatory compliance

We measure a full range of emissions, available both raw exhaust and post-aftertreatment:

  • Fuel economy (Mpg) and fuel consumption (L/100km)
  • Carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Nitric oxide (NO)
  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
  • Oxides of nitrogen (NOx = NO + NO2)
  • Nitrous oxide (N2O)
  • Total hydrocarbons (THC)
  • Particle number (PN, lower size cut-off 23 nm)
  • Particle mass (PM)
  • Ammonia (NH3)
  • Formaldehyde (CH2O)
  • Speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Sulphur dioxide (SO2)
  • Methane (CH4)
  • Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC).

How our tailpipe emissions testing (PEMS testing) works

Our emissions testing offers a reliable way to measure real-world tailpipe emissions. Unlike lab tests, PEMS captures data during actual vehicle use, providing a more accurate and complete view of environmental performance.

1. PEMS Installation

The compact, lightweight system is temporarily mounted on the vehicle with minimal disruption, enabling accurate exhaust measurements during normal operation.

2. Real-World Data Collection

As the vehicle operates, the PEMS continuously records emissions in real-world conditions giving us an accurate picture of emissions emitted.

3. Analysis & Reporting

Our team analyses the data to assess compliance, fuel efficiency, and aftertreatment performance. Findings are presented in detailed reports.
